Pride & Prejudice
Book Cover & Jacket
Date: 2023
Client: Passion Project
This is another addition to my passion project book cover collection. My cover was inspired by the act of dancing in Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice.” It’s a significant element that serves as a metaphor for the complex social dynamics and romantic relationships prevalent in the society of that time. I specifically wanted the cover to feature the strained and prideful interactions between Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy during their first dance at the Meryton assembly. It’s an early encounter that reflected their initial misunderstandings and prejudices toward one another.
While the symbol of a peacock feather may not have a direct, explicit significance in the novel, peacocks are often associated with pride and vanity, and these themes are certainly integral to the novel. I wanted to incorporate the feathers into the dance floor and into the back cover as a homage to older published editions of the novel featuring the feather.
